The Prairie Lily

The Prairie Lily

Just weeks ago, the South Saskatchewan River looked very different.

Sandbars stretched across the riverbed, the water was shallow, and the conditions simply weren’t there for The Prairie Lily to safely navigate the river. Today, thanks to extra precipitation and a healthy mountain runoff, increased water volume and current was able to move some of the sandbars and the river has come back to life.

You may have heard that the water flow is increasing again for the next few weeks. While the higher water presents challenges for paddleboards, canoes, kayaks and some smaller powered vessels, it’s exactly the kind of water The Lily was designed to navigate. In fact, one of the safest and most comfortable ways to enjoy the South Saskatchewan River this July is from the deck of The Prairie Lily.

Looking ahead, there is still important work to be done. A long-term plan is needed to address siltation downstream of the Gardiner Dam and help ensure a healthy, navigable river for years to come. But for now, we’re simply delighted to be back on the water, sharing Saskatoon from its most spectacular perspective.

Who likes before and after photos? We all do! Check out the photos below that tell the story better than words ever could. The first shows the river during the low-water conditions that kept us at the dock. The second captures the river today: deeper, fuller, and ready to welcome The Prairie Lily back where she belongs.
